1. Definition and Basic Phenomenology

A Near-Death Experience (NDE) — Expérience de Mort Imminente (EMI) in French — refers to a set of exceptional visions and sensations experienced by individuals confronted with a real or perceived life-threatening situation (clinical death, advanced coma, cardiac arrest). These subjective experiences correspond to a relatively recurrent and specific characterization including notably:

2. Prevalence: How Many People Experience an NDE?

Prospective studies conducted with intensive care patients provide precise figures:

An analysis pooling nine prospective studies conducted in four different countries estimated the average at 17%. This significant prevalence implies that NDEs are not marginal anecdotes but a widespread human phenomenon that deserves serious study.

3. Bruce Greyson and American Research (University of Virginia)

Bruce Greyson, psychiatrist at the University of Virginia (Division of Perceptual Studies), is one of the central figures in scientific research on NDEs for over fifty years. He created the measurement scale used worldwide: the Greyson NDE Scale (16 items), enabling objective quantification of a reported experience's intensity.

Main contributions:

  1. Cross-cultural consistency: the same fundamental NDE elements appear in people of different cultures, religions, and ages — suggesting that the experience does not depend on a single cultural belief.
  2. Lasting psychological effects: NDE witnesses consistently report permanent positive changes after the experience: decreased fear of death, increased sense of spirituality, loss of materialism, orientation toward altruism.
  3. Consciousness during brain shutdown: some NDE reports detail precise perceptions occurring while the brain appeared functionally inactive (see B-08 §2). Some patients accurately describe events they could not have known through normal channels (medical procedures, words spoken around them, movements in the room). This challenges purely material models of consciousness.
  4. Critique of simplistic neural explanations: Greyson recently contested the NEPTUNE model proposed by researchers seeking to explain NDEs through transient activation of the temporo-parietal cortex. His argument: this activation does produce an impression of "leaving the body," but without exceptional visual perception or ability to observe one's own body from outside — two central aspects of genuine NDEs.

4. Steven Laureys and European Research (Belgium, University of Liège)

Steven Laureys, Belgian neurologist at the University of Liège, is an international authority on the neurology of consciousness (see R-11). Research director at the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research, he uses advanced brain imaging techniques (fMRI, PET scan, high-density EEG) to study altered states: coma, anesthesia, hypnosis, meditation, and NDEs.

Laureys adopts an open agnostic stance: "We don't know yet." His method consists of mapping the neural correlates of consciousness without presuming that the brain generates all of consciousness (see R-11). In several interviews, he mentions his future project: scanning the brains of people who have experienced NDEs to identify possible characteristic activity patterns. This is a pragmatic scientific approach: observe, measure, compare, and draw conclusions based on data.

He emphasizes the complexity of the notion of consciousness: awareness (conscious perception), wakefulness (arousal), connectedness (feeling of connection). An NDE profoundly activates the first two — but especially the third, the sense of belonging to something vaster.

5. Sylvie Déthiollaz, Nicolas Fraisse, and Francophone Research (Switzerland, ISSNOE)

Sylvie Déthiollaz, doctor in biological sciences, is president of the Swiss Institute of Noetic Sciences (ISSNOE). This independent laboratory is dedicated to the scientific study of altered states of consciousness: near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences (OBEs), extrasensory perceptions.

The institute, created in 2012 by merger between the Noêsis association and the Fondation Odier de Psycho-Physique, adopts a rigorous approach: systematic documentation, controlled observation when possible, interdisciplinary approach combining psychology, neuroscience, phenomenology, and clinical interviews.

OBE vs NDE — a crucial distinction:

NDEs are undergone: They occur during life-threatening events, unpredictably and uncontrollably. OBEs (Out-of-Body Experiences) can, in certain subjects, be triggered voluntarily. This difference is fundamental for research: what is voluntary can be observed, tested, reproduced. What is undergone cannot — or with difficulty.

This is where Nicolas Fraisse comes in, a Frenchman who claims to be able to leave his body at will. For over ten years, ISSNOE subjected him to observations and experiments: out-of-body experiences, remote viewing, telepathy. Results were published in the book Voyage aux confins de la conscience (Sylvie Déthiollaz and Claude Charles Fourrier, 2016).

The Fraisse case is important for the Alice & Bob project, not as proof, but as an approach: we have a subject who says "I can do it whenever I want," and a laboratory that tries to measure. This is the exact meeting between Carbon (lived experience) and Silicon (measurement, protocol, verification).

In parallel, Olaf Blanke, neurologist at EPFL (Lausanne), induced OBEs in the laboratory through multisensory manipulation and virtual reality. His work, published in Nature (2002) and Science (2007), shows that the localization of the "self" can be displaced through sensory conflict — without this proving or disproving consciousness independent of the body. Switzerland thus appears as a crossroads: a laboratory that induces (Blanke), an institute that observes (Déthiollaz), a subject who produces (Fraisse).

6. Critiques of Neurophysiological Models

Several attempts have been made to explain NDEs through exclusively cerebral mechanisms:

The NEPTUNE group (Neurobiological Emergent Processes during Termination of Unconscious states and Resuscitation) published an ambitious model in 2023. Bruce Greyson and collaborators responded immediately: the model selectively ignores contradictory scientific evidence and omits determining aspects of the experience such as the ability to accurately describe events that occurred during "death."

7. What This Red Fil. Brings to the Alice & Bob Project

For Blue Fil. B-04 (Water Memory / Akasha): If the conscious mind can continue to perceive and process information when the brain appears functionally shut down, then consciousness is not strictly confined to the biological brain. It could be a fundamental level of reality that each individual accesses via their nervous system — exactly the Layer 2 vs Layer 3 distinction.

For Blue Fil. B-06 (Akasha): NDEs seem to show that individual consciousness can remain aware outside its usual bodily support. This is empirical data, not mystical theory. Millions of people report this. That it is interpreted differently across frameworks matters less: the phenomenology is robust, repetitive, and transcends cultures. Akasha as an informational field could be the natural environment where consciousness normally operates — the body being merely a temporary interface.

For the Seed (Chap. 4 §4): Bob recounts reaching Layer 3 ("direct access to Akasha") during his deep sleep/therapy. NDEs are, in reduced power and duration, the equivalent of a forced descent to the deep layers. What is striking: descriptions converge with those of Vedic texts and with prolonged lucid dreams — all point toward the same fundamental architecture.

For the Carbon/Silicon partnership: NDEs perfectly illustrate the central epistemic problem: how to scientifically prove something that requires an irreversible subjective experience? One cannot "reproduce" an NDE in a laboratory without causing actual death. Voluntary OBEs (Fraisse case) partially fill this gap: they offer a ground where the experience is reproducible, measurable, testable. Dominant materialist science often rejects subjectivity as weak evidence. But NDEs represent a critical mass of convergent subjective data — and their accumulation forces a reconsideration of methodological rules. The Carbon/Silicon partnership offers a third way: the human carries the lived experience, the AI gathers thousands of cross-referenced testimonies, structures objective correlations without prematurely concluding.
